Kalanjiyam brings IT to rural schools September 2008
Bringing Information Technology based education to rural schools!
On August 11th 2008 Kalanjiyam launched a first of its kind effort in rural schools, bringing information technology based education or computer aided learning in partnership with Everonn Systems India Limited.  The program was launched in St. Joseph High School in Pavunjur, Kancheepuram district by Mr. R. Kannan , Director of Everonn Systems India Ltd.

What is computer aided education? It is the use of computer and information technologies to teach students their regular school syllabus. The primary goal of computer aided education to increase the learning capacity among students and the effectiveness and productivity of teachers. The use of visualized materials and computer graphic images enable better understanding of concepts and subject matters and therefore enhance learning among students. 

This program has now been launched in St. Joseph School in Pavunjur for 10th students and will subsequently be launched for 9th class students. Henceforth their mathematics and science class content will be projected on a screen using the latest technologies and students will be taught these subjects with the aid of computer based visual materials.  Their teachers have been trained to use the computer and use the visual materials for teaching the students their regular lessons for these subjects.  During the launch, Mr. Kannan has promised to extended for more subjects and more classes in the school shortly.  The impact of the program on the learning of the students will be monitored and tracked by Kalanjiyam. 

Since April 2008 we have been assessing the feasibility of introducing a rigorous computer aided education for rural schools.  We therefore initiated dialogue with Everonn Systems.    We selected one school in our area, St. Joseph High School , one of the main high schools in the town of Pavunjur , which serves a population from about 20 to 30 villages in the Lathur block. As a first effort we conducted a detailed assessment among 122 students and 36 teachers to ascertain their views and comfort level for learning their lessons using a computer and for having this program forward in their school.  We got a very positive response from students, teachers and the school administration and therefore proceeded forward.

We are happy to be able to bring this current effort in partnership with Everonn Systems.  We believe these program will make a difference for student’s learning and therefore bring vast benefits for the future of these students and therein the communities in our villages.  We believe that our program will help to bridge the gap created by the digital divide, between the urban and rural areas… In the upcoming years we plan to work with Everonn Systems to bring this for more classes in St. Joseph High school as well as to other rural schools in our area!
