Early childhood is critical period in a child’s development. Various inputs are required during this stage for improving health and preventing development of various forms of disabilities. Such inputs need to be holistic and address the children, families and community at large to ensure a bright and healthy future.
Kalanjiyam program for early childhood is a comprehensive and holistic program addressing various factors that affect a child’s development. A main thrust of the program is reducing disabilities arising due to preventable causes such as poor nutrition, lack of education and lack of knowledge and changing attitudes of families and communities to have long term impacts. The key components of the Kalanjiyam early childhood program are therefore: Improving nutritional status of children, since poor nutrition early in childhood can lead to poor motor function, forms of mental retardation, poor hearing and eyesight, anemia, and poor mental capability. v Provide for a enabling environment for better learning and education, for lack of proper education during the pre school years can also be a cause for poor mental development and performance and inability to perform in subsequent years. v Provide for clinical assessments / health check ups with follow ups, so as to address any developmental disabilities early on in life. v Increasing community awareness on aspects of early childhood and education, for having a bright and healthy future generation. v Improving the involvement of teacher, mothers, families and communities in the pre school program, to change attitudes towards the needs of children and importance of providing a healthy environment for early childhood. We are running this program in selected villages: Kalpat, Pinnagandai, Dharmapuram, Pudur, Ariyanoor, Chinna Venmani and Mela Kandai. In these villages, we are working intensely with the children (3 to 6 years), their mothers and families.
