Improving livelihood options
Crucial for improving the quality of life is to support individuals and communities in their livelihood options.  The main objective of this program is to identify employment opportunities for young people in the villages, so as to service the needs of the villages as well as bring about financial security to individuals.  Through this program Kalanjiyam aims to enable the community to become self-reliant and use their own resources to the optimum.

Kalanjiyam provides full or partial support to individuals, based on need, for starting small enterprises.  The unique aspect of the program is that all those who were supported in the venture, will put a portion of the recovered costs back into some community development initiatives.   In this project we provide specific focus to those families in need or individuals with special needs.

In this regard, this year our village committee identified youth with an economic need from our villages. We provided life skills and livelihood skills to these young men.  In the last year we provided training for driving and secured driving license for 18 youth from local villages.  We have also been supporting local enterprises run by young men by employing them to produce materials required in our local village schools.  We have provided support for skill training of young women from our villages last year. Some of them, having a disability and economic need, have been provided a powered tailoring machine to help improve their family’s livelihood.  They in turn have provided training on tailoring to other young women in our villages.
